Military Acronyms

#'s

  •  4x4 - 4-wheel drive vehicle; the first "4" is wheels on the ground, the second "4" is wheels driven; now in common civilian use, spoken as four-by-four
  •  4x2 - 2 wheel drive common vehicle; 4 wheels on ground, 2 wheels driven

A

  •  ACS - Army Community Services — ACS provides education and prevention programs in areas of parenting, child advocacy, personal finances, relocation, and information referral.
  •  AIT - Advanced Infantry Training; Advanced Individual Training (specialty training post-BCT)
  •  AFV - Armored Fighting Vehicle
  •  AMF - Army Modular Force (Modularity)
  •  ASAP - As Soon As Possible (pronounced "Ay-Sap"; sometimes as initials)
  •  AWOL - Absent WithOut Leave

B

  •  BCT - Basic Combat Training (familiarly: Basic Training, "Boot Camp" or "Beast")
  •  BDU - Battle Dress Uniform
  •  BRAC - Base Realignment and Closures — The realignment and restructuring of military installations worldwide.
  •  BX - Base eXchange Air Force name for A PX(see below).

  •  Civilians (DA /DoDCivilians) - Employees who work for the Army or Department of Defense.
  •  CO - Commanding Officer
  •  CONUS - Continental United States
  •  CYS - Child and Youth Services — An Army program that provides child care and youth programs for military-connected children from age 0-18.

D

  •  DA - Department of the Army
  •  DFAC - Dining Facility (Mess Hall or Cafeteria)

E

  •  EDCSA - Effective Date of Change of Strength Accountability
  •  EFMP - Exceptional Family Member Program — An Army program (located with ACS) that provides information and advocacy for military-connected families who have special needs.
  •  ETS - Expiration of Term of Service (scheduled date of separation from active duty).

  •  FTX - Field Training Exercise.

  •  HMMWV Humvee - High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle
  •  Housing - An Army agency that assists soldiers and families locate and secure housing on and off the installation.

I

  •  ICC - Interactive Counseling Center — A web-based video conferencing system that allows families and educational counselors to exchange information between sending and receiving schools.
  •  IEP - Individual Education Plan
  •  IG - Inspector General
  •  IGPBS - Integrated Global Presence and Basing Strategy — The closing of overseas installations and units returning to the United States.

  •  KIA - Killed in Action

  •  MCEC - Military Child Education Coalition — A non-profit, world-wide organization that identifies the challenges that face the highly mobile military child, increases awareness of these challenges in military and educational communities and initiates and implements programs to meet the challenges.
  •  MIA - Missing in Action; missing in a battle situation, not known if alive or dead.
  •  MOAB - officially, Massive Ordnance Air Blast
  •  MOS - Military Occupational Specialty—formal job classification, usually expressed as a number or number/letter combination—e.g., 11B Infantryman.
  •  MRE - officially, Meal Ready to Eat;
  •  MWR - Morale, Welfare, and Recreation — Army programs designed to provide recreation programs for soldiers and families. Programs include clubs, golf, bowling, Child and Youth Services programs, Army Community Services, lodging, libraries, fitness centers, etc.

N

  •  NCO - Non-Commissioned Officer: an enlisted person with command responsibility over soldiers of lesser rank; a corporal (grade E4) or any grade of sergeant (grades E5 - E9); see also Specialist.

  •  OCS - Officer Candidate School

P

  •  PCA - Permanent Change of Assignment (new assignment at same base/post)
  •  PCS - Permanent Change of Station (re-assignment from one place to another)
  •  PMCS - Preventive Maintenance, Checks and Services
  •  POW - Prisoner of War
  •  PT - Physical Training. Although in the plural (PT's), it means the PT Uniform.
  •  PX - Post eXchange. A multipurpose store which usually includes a barber shop and a convenience store.

Q

  •  Quarters - Homes located on the installation for soldiers and families.

R

  •  RA - Regular Army soldier; i.e., one who enlisted, not a draftee, reservist or Guardsman; from the service number prefix for such soldiers. Not necessarily a lifer.
  •  RCI - Residential Communities Initiative — Actus Lend Lease was selected by the U.S. Army as the preferred developer for the $285 million community development for Army housing at Fort Knox. More than 2,500 homes will be constructed or renovated during the first eight years of the project. Actus Lend Lease will finance, develop, build, renovate, and operate the community for a minimum of 50 years.
  •  RPG - Rocket propelled grenade
  •  ROTC - Reserve Officer Training Corps

  •  S2S - Student to Student — A team from a school campus trained to return to their home campus to provide leadership and training to other students on methods to support students who are transitioning to or from their school.
  •  SELI - Special Education Leadership Institute — A series of institutes developed to promote awareness and increase the availability of professional educators who understand the challenges associated with transitioning mobile military connected students with special needs.
  •  SETS - Secondary Education Transition Study — The U.S. Army asked MCEC to design, conduct and coordinate a comprehensive study of the affects of transition during high school years.
  •  SETS MOA - Secondary Education Transition Study Memorandum of Agreement — A written agreement between and among school systems that support military families worldwide which provides a common structure for information sharing and reciprocal processes.
  •  SLO - School Liaison Officer — A School Liaison Officer is employed at each Army installation to assist school districts, parents and installation staff with the smooth transition of school age children into and out of local schools.
  •  STRT - School Transition Response Team — The STRT is intended to involve a variety of stakeholders. This team will develop the action plan necessary to ensure the smooth relocation of school-age children of military families.
  •  STRAC - STRategic Army Command; STRAC units were those designated to be on high alert to move anywhere in 72 hours or less.
  •  STX - Situational Training Exercise

  •  TCI - Transition Counselor Institute
  •  TDY - Temporary DutY (individual or unit)

U

  •  US - Drafted soldier, from prefix of service number, in turn from Army of the United States, sarcastically: Unwilling Soldier.
  •  UOINDIC - Unless Otherwise INDICated (qualifier on orders or paperwork)

V

  •  VTC - Video Teleconference

W-Z

  •  XO - Executive Officer (officer second to CO)
