School Boards of Education

Generally, local school boards of education are comprised of elected or appointed members who carry out the state's educational obligations at a local level. The primary function of any school board is to oversee the education of children in the community by setting general school policies and establishing guidelines to ensure proper administration of the school program. In many locations, school boards have the general powers to:
- Educate students
- Employ a superintendent, administrators, teachers and support staff
- Provide for the safety and welfare of students
- Acquire and dispose of school property
- Determine matters relating to school employees and contractors
- Control the expenditure and receipt of school funds
- Levy local taxes to run schools
