Where does my child attend school?
Your child will attend schools in the district in which they live.  If you live in Cumberland County, you will attend Cumberland County Schools, if you live in Hoke County, you will attend Hoke County Schools, if you live in Fort Bragg, you will attend Fort Bragg schools, etc. 

Can my child attend Fort Bragg Schools if we live off post?
No -- if you have chosen to reside off post, then your child must be enrolled within the county.  Fort Bragg does not accept registrations from families residing off post.  However, if you are residing off post WITH a 90-day letter from Fort Bragg Housing stating that you will be residing on post within 90 days, Fort Bragg Schools will register your child (transportation is not provided from off post schools).

Fort Bragg doesn't have a high school, where does my teenager attend high school?
Teens residing on Fort Bragg attends EE Smith High School as their host high school.  Teens residing in Linden Oaks attend Overhills High School in Harnett County.  Teens residing in Heritage Village attend Hoke High School in Hoke County.

Why doesn't Fort Bragg have a high school?
Department of Defense Education Agency, which administers Fort Bragg Schools, will not support additional high schools in the Continental United States.

Why can't my children attend Fort Bragg schools when we live in Heritage Village?
Heritage Village is Fort Bragg leased housing.  This means that Heritage Village is NOT federal property and merely a privately owned housing area leased to Fort Bragg.

What day does school start/end?
School systems determine the academic calendars individually. NC DPI does not maintain a central list of these. Please contact your school system for more information.

At what age can my child start school?
If the child reaches the age of five years on or before August 31st of the year he/she is presented for enrollment, the child is eligible to enroll. If his fifth birth date falls on or after September 1st, the child is not eligible to enroll. For more information about School Entry Age, please visit NC Public Schools. If you are enrolling your student on Fort Bragg Schools, they must be the age of five on or before September 1st of the year he/she is presented for enrollment.

I am moving to the area. How do I enroll my child in school?
Enrollment is handled at the local level. Please contact your school district for further details. Visit the N.C. School Report Cards site to look up school and school district contact information.

How do you enroll in a charter school?
Parents must contact each individual school to see if they have openings. If they have more applicants than available slots, an open lottery must be instituted to fill the remaining spots. What are the best schools in North Carolina?
NC DPI does not rank or recommend schools. Decisions should be made through careful research of student performance, atmosphere, activities, location, etc. You are encouraged to visit the N.C. School Report Cards site online. Each report card includes a school or district profile and information about student performance, safe schools, access to technology, and teacher quality. However, the best source of information is the local school system. The state's accountability program does not take into account other factors that may be important to you such as leadership, school environment, breadth of academic offerings, and extracurricular programs.

Where can I find more information about private or home schooling?
The Department of Public Instruction does not oversee private or home schooling. Instead, please contact the Division of Non-Public Education on the Web at http://www.ncdnpe.org/ or by phone 919.733.4276.

I live in Spring Lake, can I register my high school student at Overhills High School?
If your residence is in Spring Lake, it is considered Cumberland County, then you may NOT enroll in Overhills High School.  Overhills High School (although it is a Spring Lake address), is in Harnett County, and students at Overhills High School must reside in Harnett County.

If I live in Linden Oaks, where do my children attend school?
If you reside in Linden Oaks, your children reside in the Fort Bragg district and are assigned to Fort Bragg Schools, K-9th grade.  Fort Bragg Schools do not operate a high school; therefore, Linden Oaks high school students attend Overhills High School in Harnett County Schools.  9th grades students residing in Linden Oaks have a choice of attending Albritton Junior High School (Fort Bragg Schools) or Overhills High School (Harnett County Schools).

Linden Oaks residents also have the opportunity to enroll their children for all grade levels in Harnett County Schools.  However, transportation is not provided for any students living in Linden Oaks attending Harnett County School, grades K-8.  (All high school students living in Linden Oaks attending Overhills High School is provided school transportation).

Can I enroll my child into Kindergarten prior to being 5 years old?
There is a process and requirements to put your child into Kindergarten.  Read more about early Kindergarten enrollment.

What can parents do to augment their student's education?
Parents play an active role in their child's education.  There a little things parents can do augment their student's education and involvement is the key.  Your student will understand the value of education with good communication with the teacher and school from the first day of school.  Parents can also create a specific time and place for school work each day as well as routinely checking their school work and talking to them about their day in school.  Ask your student questions about what they are doing in school and ask questions to the teacher about how you can help your child in school.

Can School Support Services circumvent school policies?
No.  Under no circumstance can Fort Bragg or School Support Services ever circumvent school policies. 

How can School Support Services assist me in choosing a school?
It is a common question from parents to ask School Support Services which is the best school in the area.  Since educational success differs for each student and family, School Support Services cannot recommend the "best" school.  However, School Support Services can provide guidance on how to select a school.  These decision often are based the needs of the child, academic and extra-curricular interests and housing decisions.  All surrounding schools have successful children, School Support Services can assist Families choose a school that can best fit their children.
